The 2024 Smokehouse Creek fire severely impacted agricultural communities in the Texas Panhandle and parts of Oklahoma. The wildfire burned over 1 million acres, killed approximately 15,000 cattle, and caused around $123 million in agricultural losses.
AgriSafe is here to support recovery and resilience through a variety of FREE trainings designed for both healthcare professionals and rural community members. These programs address mental health and wellness, suicide prevention and intervention, wildfire-related health hazards, and respiratory health and safety, helping individuals and communities recover, reduce the risk of injury, and prepare for future wildfire events.

TRAINING FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS:
- Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) Workshop for health professionals (in-person or virtual) – CALM Counseling is a 4-hour workshop for mental health clinicians, primary care providers, substance abuse counselors, hotline responders, and crisis intervention services. This training includes case studies and video vignettes and provides focused practice between learners. The workshop is designed to help health professionals create a safety plan with a collaborative approach with clients and their families and explore alternative choices for safe storage to “cause a pause”.
- FarmResponse®(on demand) – FarmResponse is a virtual, on-demand, 3.5-hour continuing education course for a wide range of healthcare providers and new professionals working in the agricultural support space, covering topics such as stressors in agriculture, suicide risk, and effective communication with farmers. AgriSafe has trained close to 3000 individuals in FarmResponse to date.
- Nurse Scholar Program (on demand) – The AgriSafe Nurse Scholar program is an online, on-demand learning experience taught by experts in agricultural health & safety, offering over 20 hours of continuing nursing education. The program helps nurses increase their competence in prevention, identification, and assessment of diseases and conditions commonly experienced by people working in agriculture.
TRAINING FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES:
- Animal Depopulation Resiliency Training (in-person or virtual) – AgriSafe’s newest training option is a 1–2-hour workshop that equips individuals and teams with practical tools to navigate the physical and emotional demands of depopulation events.
- Conversations on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) for Agricultural Communities (in-person or virtual) – CALM training educates participants on reducing access to means of self-harm (medications, firearms, etc) among individuals in crisis. It is especially relevant in rural areas where firearms are common.
- Enhancing Relationships to Reduce Stressors (in-person or virtual) – Communication and relationships are common stressors cited by producers and farm families. Combining family and business is challenging. Presented through a farm family lens, this 1-hour training focuses on building communication skills to navigate tough conversations whether talking to an employee or a spouse.
- Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) for Agricultural Communities (in-person or virtual) – QPR is a live 1.5-hour suicide prevention session teaching participants how to recognize and respond to someone at risk of suicide.
DIRECT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO DISASTER RESPONSE PROFESSIONALS:
- AgriSafe is offering free technical assistance (TA) to disaster response professionals with a focus on agricultural public health risks. The TA can be as short as an hour of virtual support up to five hours. First, a TA plan is developed based on the public health needs assessment. Topics offered in TA support can include but are not limited to training on agricultural mental health and stressors, suicide intervention, depopulation resiliency, wildfire health threats and safety, and/or respiratory health and safety. These topics cover essential post-wildfire skills and knowledge. Distribution of educational materials and personal protective equipment may be requested.
