AgriSafe offers Invest In Your Health Trainer Exchanges where professional can be certified to train on five AgriSafe modules (targeted for ages 16-23). AgriSafe provides the course instruction and training materials.

Under our open share platform, once certified, you would be free to use the training materials in your classroom setting. Our end goal is to build the capacity of local ag educators, rural health professionals and rural leaders to train young Ag producers.

ON-SITE:
Trainer exchanges can be scheduled at a time and location that best ts your group needs. Consider hosting a trainer exchange in your community.

WEBINAR STREAMED:
Trainer exchanges can be scheduled for your group through live streaming technology. All you need is access to a white board, computer, and speakers.

FREE WEBINARS:
AgriSafe will hold trainer exchanges on each module. These webinars are open to the public so register early. Check website for upcoming webinars and date changes.

Say What?

Protecting your hearing

The young producer works in an environment with noise hazards and plays in an environment with noise hazards. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is common (and preventable) but unfortunately, use of hearing protection among youth is not.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the ear;
  • identify harmful exposures which have the potential to cause hearing damage;
  • identify preventive strategies to reduce exposure to noise;
  • describe appropriate selection and use of personal protective equipment;

Cover up!

Head to Toe Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) recommended for many farm tasks. In agriculture, people work in a variety of environments and are exposed to several safety, health, environmental, biological, and respiratory hazards.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • understand the purpose of PPE;
  • recognize and understand how to use essential PPE;
  • learn prevention of exposures though the use of Head to Toe Protection, AgriSafe’s fact sheet;

Stay Cool!

Prevention of Heat Related Illness

In 2014, 253,000 young workers between the ages of 16-23 were employed in agriculture. In production agriculture, it is common to work in a hot environment and/ or in direct sunlight. Every year, thousands of workers become sick from exposure to heat, and some even die. Heat-related illnesses, while potentially deadly, are easily preventable.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • identify the various types of heat related illnesses;
  • identify warning signs of life threatening exposure;
  • learn immediate care procedures;
  • access educational resources;

Stop Zoonosis in its Tracks

Prevention of Zoonosis

Agricultural producers are at high risk for acquiring a zoonotic disease related to their work environment with minimal information related to risks, symptoms and prevention. The majority of emerging infectious diseases in the U.S. are zoonotic in nature. They are often difficult to determine and many go unreported for a variety of reasons.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • define zoonotic disease and identify various modes of transm ission;
  • locate recommended educational resources for use in educational programs;
  • discuss warning signs and symptoms of major zoonotic diseases;
  • identify zoonotic diseases affecting the production agricultural population;

Where Y’at

Using Mapping to Define Hazards in Agriculture

A Hazard Map is a visual representation of the workplace where there are hazards that could cause injuries or illness. It is a hands on, interactive learning opportunity.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • examine the hazards in agricultural production;
  • identify and locate hazards so that those hazards can be targeted for elimination;
  • respect the vast array of skill, experience and know-how that students have about their farm jobs and their dangers;
  • collectively and creatively pool knowledge and prioritize problems to eliminate;

Prevent

It’s a misconception that young adults don’t want to prevent illness. Our research shows that it is possible to empower Ag students to invest now rather than later in healthy choices.

Health professionals will be encouraged to team up with educators and provide the following:

  • AgriSafe Health Risk Assessment
  • Wellness check
  • Flu shots

Protect

Access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the classroom is an important component of hands on learning. PPE includes items such as respirators, safety glasses, gloves etc. AgriSafe will demonstrate how best to equip students with PPE, where to locate samples for classroom demonstrations and how to connect young producers with reliable points of PPE sales.
