SUMMARY:Webinar: Zoonotic Disease and Pregnancy: A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Zoonotic Diseases are transmitted between farm animals and humans and can pose additional risks to those who are pregnant. According to the World Health Organization\, more than half of all human pathogens are zoonotic and have represented nearly all emerging pathogens during the past decade. Farmers and farmworkers have higher levels of risk for contracting zoonotic diseases because of the frequency of their exposure to animals. Prevention is the best defense. Understanding how the disease transmission process works\, building a team\, and effectively communicating within that team is essential in preventing the spread of zoonotic disease. Women working in agriculture should be aware of the following special considerations during pregnancy: which animals are common carriers of zoonotic disease\, symptoms of the disease(s)\, prevention measures\, and pregnancy risks. \nIntended Audience: Supervisor or Managers: This training is intended primarily for health and safety professionals including but not limited to owner/operators\, safety officers or specialists\, managers\, supervisors\, safety coordinators\, health safety and environmental interns\, and any person or persons who serve as safety personnel in an agricultural setting. Producers: This training is intended primarily for agricultural producers including but not limited to farmers\, ranchers\, and any person or persons involved in some combination of raising field crops\, orchards\, vineyards\, horticulture\, or other livestock. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-05068-SH8 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. SUMMARY:Invest in Your Health Week: Tools for Ag Educators
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nRegister for the entire week and attend as many webinars as you can! The recordings will be available for the ones you miss. \nMonday\, October 17\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nSay What? Protecting Your Hearing \nThis Invest in Your Health: Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders\, and others who work with young adults. The young ag producer works in an environment with noise hazards and plays in an environment with noise hazards. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is common (and preventable) but unfortunately\, the use of hearing protection among youth is not. \nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCultivating a Healthy Mind – Mental Wellness for Youth \nStigma exists across all age groups for those struggling with mental health. Navigation of the teen years in everyday situations can create angst and uncomfortable feelings that are difficult to express. Adding mental illness and mental crisis to a teen or young adult’s typical growth and development makes struggling with emotions\, relationships\, academic success\, and safety more challenging. According to the CDC\, rates of depression and anxiety climb significantly during the ages of 12-17. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of youths in the United States. This module opens an introductory discussion of mental health among teens and young adults with guidance from an adult educator. Focus is placed on decreasing stigma\, improving mental health literacy\, and positive coping skills for teens and young adults. The module showcases a high school agricultural student’s understanding of the agricultural mental health crisis\, helping to frame mental health distress to academic and future career success. \nWednesday\, October 19\, 2022 @12pm-1pm CT \nStop Zoonosis in its Tracks – Prevention of Zoonosis \nAgricultural producers are at high risk for acquiring a zoonotic disease related to their work environment with minimal information related to risks\, symptoms and prevention. The majority of emerging infectious diseases in the U.S. are zoonotic in nature. They are often difficult to determine and many go unreported for a variety of reasons. \nThursday\, October 20\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nWhere Y’at – Using Mapping to Define Hazards in Agriculture \nParticipants will learn about the Hazard Mapping curriculum and will be given access to all teacher and student materials after completing the webinar. A Hazard Map is a visual representation of the workplace where there are hazards that could cause injuries or illness. The Hazard Mapping method draws on what students know from their farming experience. The Hazard Mapping approach works best when conducted among a small group of students with some similarity in their work and exposures. \nFriday\, October 21\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCover Up! Head to Toe Personal Protective Equipment \nThis Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders and others who work with young adults. \nAgriculture is ranked as one of the most dangerous occupations and involves workers and family members of all ages. Illness and injuries can be prevented if we use the right protective equipment for the job. This program will present an overview of common exposures in farming and ranching and identify appropriate personal protective equipment.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Exploring Health and Safety for Black Farmers: Racism\, Land Access\, Mental Health\, and Resources
DESCRIPTION:Summary: The number of Black farmers in the United States has declined over the last century. One hundred years ago\, farmers identifying as Black or mixed race made up about 14 percent of total ag producers. According to a 2017 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) census\, of the 3.4 million farmers across the country\, 1.3%\, or only 45\,508\, identify as Black compared to 95% who identify as Caucasian. SUMMARY:Webinar: Zoonotic Disease and Pregnancy: A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Zoonotic Diseases are transmitted between farm animals and humans and can pose additional risks to those who are pregnant. According to the World Health Organization\, over half of all human pathogens are zoonotic and have represented nearly all emerging pathogens in the past decade. Farmers and farmworkers have a higher risk of contracting zoonotic diseases because of the frequency of their animal exposure. \nPrevention is the best defense. \nIntended Audience:  Supervisor or Managers: This training is intended primarily for health and safety professionals\, including but not limited to owner/operators\, safety officers or specialists\, managers\, supervisors\, safety coordinators\, health safety and environmental interns\, and any person or persons who serve as safety personnel in an agricultural setting. \nProducers: This training is intended primarily for agricultural producers\, including but not limited to farmers\, ranchers\, and any person or persons involved in some combination of raising field crops\, orchards\, vineyards\, horticulture\, or other livestock. \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to… \n\nDefine zoonotic disease and identify various modes of transmission.\nIdentify a minimum of four significant zoonotic diseases affecting the production agricultural population.\nDiscuss warning signs and symptoms of major zoonotic diseases which have adverse effects on reproductive health.\nLocate at least three recommended educational resources for training an agricultural workforce.\n\nThis material was produced under grant number SH-05068-SH8 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. SUMMARY:Webinar: Best Practices in the Detection and Monitoring of Pesticide Exposure
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Farmers and agricultural workers are routinely exposed to a wide variety of chemicals. Toxicity Category I and II organophosphates (OPs) and N-methyl carbamates are cholinesterase-inhibiting insecticides commonly used in agriculture to kill insects or prevent them from damaging or destroying crops. Over-exposure to these chemicals results in the inhibition of the enzyme cholinesterase (ChE) which is utilized in the body’s conducting tissue\, such as nerve and muscle motor sensory fibers. Acute toxic effects can include confusion\, headache\, and even loss of consciousness. Severe inhibition of ChE in the body can result in muscle paralysis\, respiratory failure\, seizures\, coma\, and death. Currently\, there is no practice standard or national medical surveillance program for cholinesterase monitoring. \nPurpose: This webinar will review cholinesterase testing and monitoring protocols based on programs from both California and Washington. Presenters will discuss ChE and its function in the body\, routes of exposure\, who is at risk\, signs and symptoms\, treatments\, and prevention of exposure. Most importantly\, presenters will share an established and recently updated protocol algorithm to guide your medical monitoring program. This protocol is designed to create awareness among your workers\, set standards based on acceptable safe practices\, and reduce incidents in the workplace. \nOutcomes: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to … \n\nSelf-report an increased understanding of the health risks of cholinesterase (ChE)-inhibiting pesticide exposure and need for regular monitoring.\nSelf-report an increased understanding of the use of a protocol and the ChE monitoring algorithm\n\nIntended Audience: Occupational safety managers\, emergency service providers\, doctors\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, physician assistants\, and educators whose practice will be enhanced with the most current information on cholinesterase exposure and management \nContinuing Medical Education: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Minnesota Medical Association and AgriSafe Network. The Minnesota Medical Association (MMA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. \nThe Minnesota Medical Association designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. SUMMARY:Webinar: Preventing Workplace Violence for Forestry Workers

Workplace violence is violence or the threat of violence against workers. This training will review the many forms of workplace violence among co-workers\, including sexual harassment. The scope and nature of workplace violence occurring in the forestry sector today. \n2. Employers’ responsibilities in addressing workplace violence and implementing preventive measures. \n3. Effective strategies and interventions can make the workplace safer and more responsive to employee victims. \n Watch the Recording Here \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-39184-SH2 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor.
