SUMMARY:Webinar: Culture is Our Wellness [La Cultura Cura]
DESCRIPTION:Culture is our Wellness [La Cultura Cura]\nSummary: The science of medicine has been part of every culture around the world. However\, the contemporary allopathic medical model represents only part of our understanding of health\, healing\, and wellbeing\, and not failing to mention\, it is not always accessible to marginalized communities. This webinar introduces the practice of Curanderismo as an ethno-indigenous form of health and healing originating in Mesoamerica and practiced among many Latinx communities. The presenters will discuss their work with traditional medicine and present the specializations of Curanderismo\, which can be used by people of all cultural backgrounds and various health providers with their patients. \nThe presenters will begin with a brief opening ceremony\, provide their personal narratives of traditional healing\, a historical grounding of Curanderismo\, present the specializations of the traditional medicine\, and discuss current efforts to integrate traditional and allopathic medicine. \nObjectives: At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to… \n\nDescribe a general knowledge base of Curanderismo.\nIdentify the specializations of traditional healing practices.\nAppraise the role of traditional healing in their work.\n\nIntended Audience: Healthcare\, safety\, occupational\, and agricultural professionals\, and anyone with an interest in learning how these health practices impact health beliefs and wellbeing for populations that value this specialization in healing. \nPresenters: \nCaroline E. Ortiz\, MS\, MPH\, RN\, NC-BC\, Associate Professor – Holistic Nursing Program\, Pacific College of Health and Science \nGrowing up bicultural and bilingual along the U. S.-Mexico border in the Texas Rio Grande Valley\, Caroline encountered a myriad of perspectives on health. As the daughter of a nurse\, she took her medicine and followed the doctor’s orders. As the granddaughter of a Mexican woman\, she drank her herbal teas\, submitted to body sweepings with an egg\, and followed the recommendations of the local curandera. Now with over 25 years of nursing experience\, Caroline’s work\, which has been shared locally\, nationally\, and internationally\, centers on promoting individual and community health through holistic approaches. Currently\, she is an Associate Professor in Holistic Nursing at Pacific College of Health and Science and a doctoral student at Villanova University. Caroline is apprenticing in curanderismo\, the traditional Mesoamerican medicine from Mexico\, and researching the use of traditional medicine by Mexican American women living in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. This path has brought her back to where she started… navigating life with a foot in two worlds. \n  \nThomas A. Chávez\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor/Research Faculty\, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center\, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, Division of Community Behavioral Health \nDr. Thomas A. Chávez is a counseling psychologist and currently a faculty member at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center/School of Medicine. He has taught courses in counseling with an emphasis on cultural proficiency. His scholarship focuses on improving the health and well-being of Latinx communities through culturally centered interventions. In part\, his mission is to integrate traditional medicine to promote holistic health. As such\, he has grown up with the practices of traditional healing and has over ten years of practice in the specialization of traditional massage and ventosas (fire cupping) and facilitating sweat lodges. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n Watch Now \n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: ATV-UTV Safety for Women
DESCRIPTION:ATV-UTV Safety for Women\nSummary: Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous industries. Farmers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries\, and farming is one of few industries in which family members (who often share the work and live on the premises) are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries. ATVs and UTVs are found on all types of farms; they are useful for agricultural work\, but they also pose serious hazards to operators and passengers. Studies indicate that injured ATV/UTV passengers are more commonly female and youth and that helmet use is significantly lower for passengers. The focus of the training would be on ATV/UTV maintenance and safety features\, personal protective equipment (PPE)\, load and weight considerations\, operation on public roadways\, as well as employee training and considerations for working alone. \nIntended Audience: Producers- This training is intended primarily for agricultural producers\, including but not limited to farmers\, ranchers\, and any person or persons involved in some combination of raising field crops\, orchards\, vineyards\, poultry\, or other livestock. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-05068-SH8 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. It does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the U.S. Department of Labor\, nor does mention of trade names\, commercial products\, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: ¡Basta! Working Together to Prevent Sexual Harassment in the Agricultural Workplace
DESCRIPTION:!Basta! Working Together to Prevent Sexual Harassment in the Agricultural Workplace\nSummary: Workplace sexual harassment (WSH) in agriculture is a persistent and pervasive problem that threatens employees’ safety and well-being and damages organizational climate and trajectory. Until recently\, tailored trainings about WSH and resources specific to the agricultural sector and its audiences were lacking. Over the past several years\, researchers and partners with the Pacific Northwest Agriculture Safety and Health (PNASH) Center in Washington State have worked with a number of agricultural and industry stakeholders (e.g. farmworkers\, growers\, government leaders and agencies\, legal experts\, advocates\, etc.)\, to explore the nature of WSH and to develop relative education\, resources\, and training. \nWhile education alone will not stop WSH\, it’s an important strategy in a multi-faceted approach to prevention. In this webinar\, participants will be introduced to The Basta! Prevent Sexual Harassment in Agriculture training\, toolkit\, and video. The Basta! training uses an evidence-based\, community-engaged approach to help employees\, HR staff\, and growers prevent and address sexual harassment in the agricultural workplace. \n  \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Zoonotic Disease and Pregnancy: A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Zoonotic Diseases are transmitted between farm animals and humans and can pose additional risks to those who are pregnant. According to the World Health Organization\, more than half of all human pathogens are zoonotic and have represented nearly all emerging pathogens during the past decade. Farmers and farmworkers have higher levels of risk for contracting zoonotic diseases because of the frequency of their exposure to animals. Prevention is the best defense. SUMMARY:Invest in Your Health Week: Tools for Ag Educators
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nRegister for the entire week and attend as many webinars as you can! The recordings will be available for the ones you miss. \nMonday\, October 17\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nSay What? Protecting Your Hearing \nThis Invest in Your Health: Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders\, and others who work with young adults. The young ag producer works in an environment with noise hazards and plays in an environment with noise hazards. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is common (and preventable) but unfortunately\, the use of hearing protection among youth is not. \nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCultivating a Healthy Mind – Mental Wellness for Youth \nStigma exists across all age groups for those struggling with mental health. Navigation of the teen years in everyday situations can create angst and uncomfortable feelings that are difficult to express. Adding mental illness and mental crisis to a teen or young adult’s typical growth and development makes struggling with emotions\, relationships\, academic success\, and safety more challenging. According to the CDC\, rates of depression and anxiety climb significantly during the ages of 12-17. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of youths in the United States. This module opens an introductory discussion of mental health among teens and young adults with guidance from an adult educator. Focus is placed on decreasing stigma\, improving mental health literacy\, and positive coping skills for teens and young adults. The module showcases a high school agricultural student’s understanding of the agricultural mental health crisis\, helping to frame mental health distress to academic and future career success. \nWednesday\, October 19\, 2022 @12pm-1pm CT \nStop Zoonosis in its Tracks – Prevention of Zoonosis \nAgricultural producers are at high risk for acquiring a zoonotic disease related to their work environment with minimal information related to risks\, symptoms and prevention. The majority of emerging infectious diseases in the U.S. are zoonotic in nature. They are often difficult to determine and many go unreported for a variety of reasons. \nThursday\, October 20\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nWhere Y’at – Using Mapping to Define Hazards in Agriculture \nParticipants will learn about the Hazard Mapping curriculum and will be given access to all teacher and student materials after completing the webinar. A Hazard Map is a visual representation of the workplace where there are hazards that could cause injuries or illness. The Hazard Mapping method draws on what students know from their farming experience. The Hazard Mapping approach works best when conducted among a small group of students with some similarity in their work and exposures. \nFriday\, October 21\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCover Up! Head to Toe Personal Protective Equipment \nThis Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders and others who work with young adults. \nAgriculture is ranked as one of the most dangerous occupations and involves workers and family members of all ages. Illness and injuries can be prevented if we use the right protective equipment for the job. This program will present an overview of common exposures in farming and ranching and identify appropriate personal protective equipment.
