SUMMARY:Webinar: Appropriate PPE for Women in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Agriculture is a hazardous industry associated with many occupational injuries and diseases. Workers may be exposed to various types of occupational hazards simultaneously\, possibly increasing the risk of adverse health outcomes. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is critical for ensuring a safe working environment in agriculture. It is essential to utilize PPE that meets safety standards\, is appropriate for your work\, and is the proper fit. PPE is often designed with men in mind\, making adequate fit and function problematic for women in agriculture. \nThis training will address the different hazards in agricultural work and the appropriate PPE for women. Additionally\, this training will review how to conduct both a respirator fit test and a fit check (seal check) procedure. This presentation aims to guide the selection and effectiveness of PPE worn by women in the agricultural field. \nIntended Audience: Producers – This training is intended primarily for agricultural producers\, including but not limited to farmers\, ranchers\, and any person or persons involved in some combination of raising field crops\, orchards\, vineyards\, poultry\, or other livestock. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-05068-SH8 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. It does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the U.S. Department of Labor\, nor does mention of trade names\, commercial products\, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Women and Heat Stress
DESCRIPTION:Summary: People who work outdoors are more likely to become dehydrated and experience heat-related illness or heat stress. Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable\, thousands become sick from occupational heat exposure every year\, and some cases are fatal. Agriculture is an industry where workers have suffered heat-related illnesses. Specific groups within the agricultural community\, including pregnant women\, older workers\, and young children\, could have elevated risks related to prolonged heat and humidity exposure. However\, with proper information and preventative action\, heat-related illness can be avoided for all populations in the agricultural community. \nThis training will identify the warning signs of heat-related illness and discuss prevention strategies\, including protective clothing and equipment to protect agricultural workers from the risks associated with prolonged exposure to heat and humidity. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-37171-SH1 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. It does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the U.S. Department of Labor\, nor does mention of trade names\, commercial products\, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Implementing Community-Led Interventions with Gulf Coast Seafood Workers
DESCRIPTION:Summary: The University of Texas Medical Branch conducted semi-structured interviews and observations with Gulf Coast shrimp fishermen to understand their healthcare experiences and needs as well as policies that are impacting their health. Community-based participatory research (CBPR)\, a relational model that values the participants as equal partners in research\, dissemination\, and implementation\, guided the interviews. To address the lack of healthcare options for (im)migrants\, and at the request of the seafood workers participating in the ongoing CBPR study\, we successfully implemented and treated workers through a free mobile clinic. Many of these individuals had not been seen by a healthcare provider in years\, highlighting the importance of community trust and rapport building when addressing interconnected health and safety issues. CBPR\, when applied to high-risk occupational settings with underreached populations (e.g.\, (im)migrant workers)\, can improve health and prevent injury. \nObjectives: At the end of this presentation\, participants will be able to…\n– Describe the healthcare experiences and needs of (im)migrant seafood workers\n– Describe the principles of CBPR and how it can be applied to total worker health research\n– Discuss the difficulties of CBPR and ways to ensure the community is equitably engaged in all aspects of research-to-practice partnerships \nIntended Audience: Researchers\, Practitioners\, or Policymakers \n Watch Now \n\nContinuing Education:\nThe Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety offers 0.10 CEU or 1.0 contact hour/s of participation. This course is eligible for 1.0 CPH Recertification Credits and is sponsored by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health\, an approved provider of CPH Recertification Credits by the National Board of Public Health Examiners. The following groups of professionals have been able to use these CEUs in the past; Industrial Hygiene (CIH)\, Certified Public Health Professional(CPH)\, Certified Safety Professional (CSP)\, Nursing (RN\, LPN)\, Social Work (LSW)\, Occupational Therapy (OT)\, Physical Therapy (PT)\, Audiology (ABA)\, and others. Please contact your accrediting agency regarding any questions about receiving credits. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: More than Milk: Strong Bones and Injury Prevention for Aging Women in Ag
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Do farmers or ranchers really retire? Generational family operations frequently include the aging parents\, the living legends of agriculture. Farmers and ranchers self-identify good health with the ability to work. The normal aging process slows down one’s ability to engage in meaningful activities physically and mentally\, essentially to continue working. Swirl in the postmenopausal issues incurred by the female farmer\, and a myriad of health hazards arise. \nUnlike men\, who experience a gradual loss of bone mass as they age\, women will lose over 30% of their bone mass in the first five years after menopause. Agriculture is a hazardous and uncertain profession. Women are working well past the age of menopause. Training measures should focus on avoiding common risk factors and preventative actions to decrease the likelihood of an injury. Workplace and home safety are achievable. We will also address other age-related changes such as vision\, hearing\, and sleep disturbance. Every member of the family operation will benefit from learning creative strategies and solutions to help the aging in-place seniors achieve wellness and self-fulfillment.\n \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-37171-SH1 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. It does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the U.S. Department of Labor\, nor does mention of trade names\, commercial products\, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Zoonotic Disease and Pregnancy: A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Zoonotic Diseases are transmitted between farm animals and humans and can pose additional risks to those who are pregnant. According to the World Health Organization\, more than half of all human pathogens are zoonotic and have represented nearly all emerging pathogens during the past decade. Farmers and farmworkers have higher levels of risk for contracting zoonotic diseases because of the frequency of their exposure to animals. Prevention is the best defense. Understanding how the disease transmission process works\, building a team\, and effectively communicating within that team is essential in preventing the spread of zoonotic disease. Women working in agriculture should be aware of the following special considerations during pregnancy: which animals are common carriers of zoonotic disease\, symptoms of the disease(s)\, prevention measures\, and pregnancy risks. \nIntended Audience: Supervisor or Managers: This training is intended primarily for health and safety professionals including but not limited to owner/operators\, safety officers or specialists\, managers\, supervisors\, safety coordinators\, health safety and environmental interns\, and any person or persons who serve as safety personnel in an agricultural setting. Producers: This training is intended primarily for agricultural producers including but not limited to farmers\, ranchers\, and any person or persons involved in some combination of raising field crops\, orchards\, vineyards\, horticulture\, or other livestock. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-05068-SH8 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. SUMMARY:AgriStress Helpline: 24/7 Crisis Line Built for Farmers and Ranchers
DESCRIPTION:Farmers and ranchers in multiple states can now access a crisis service helpline 24/7 staffed by trained professionals. View this 30-minute overview of the newly formed AgriStress Helpline for Farmers and Ranchers. The AgriStress Helpline is an evidence-based suicide prevention lifeline designed for agricultural communities. \nParticipants will learn how: \n\nThis innovative crisis model serves a critical unmet need.\nThe model was designed by credentialed professionals trained to respond appropriately to the agricultural community\, through a program developed by experts in mental health\, agriculture production\, mediation\, and financial analysis.\nThe crisis line utilizes a “care navigation” process where the helpline responders: triage for safety and provide de-escalation using a crisis intervention model; provide emotional support and coping techniques; and\, when necessary\, direct callers to the appropriate resources for their situation.\nThe expansion to new states and eventually a national helpline is both economical and feasible.\n\n  \n Watch Here \nWe are adding new states all the time! If you are interested in the most up to date information on the helpline\, check out the AgriStress Helpline page.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Culture is Our Wellness [La Cultura Cura]
DESCRIPTION:Culture is our Wellness [La Cultura Cura]\nSummary: The science of medicine has been part of every culture around the world. However\, the contemporary allopathic medical model represents only part of our understanding of health\, healing\, and wellbeing\, and not failing to mention\, it is not always accessible to marginalized communities. This webinar introduces the practice of Curanderismo as an ethno-indigenous form of health and healing originating in Mesoamerica and practiced among many Latinx communities. The presenters will discuss their work with traditional medicine and present the specializations of Curanderismo\, which can be used by people of all cultural backgrounds and various health providers with their patients. \nThe presenters will begin with a brief opening ceremony\, provide their personal narratives of traditional healing\, a historical grounding of Curanderismo\, present the specializations of the traditional medicine\, and discuss current efforts to integrate traditional and allopathic medicine. \nObjectives: At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to… \n\nDescribe a general knowledge base of Curanderismo.\nIdentify the specializations of traditional healing practices.\nAppraise the role of traditional healing in their work.\n\nIntended Audience: Healthcare\, safety\, occupational\, and agricultural professionals\, and anyone with an interest in learning how these health practices impact health beliefs and wellbeing for populations that value this specialization in healing. \nPresenters: \nCaroline E. Ortiz\, MS\, MPH\, RN\, NC-BC\, Associate Professor – Holistic Nursing Program\, Pacific College of Health and Science \nGrowing up bicultural and bilingual along the U. S.-Mexico border in the Texas Rio Grande Valley\, Caroline encountered a myriad of perspectives on health. As the daughter of a nurse\, she took her medicine and followed the doctor’s orders. As the granddaughter of a Mexican woman\, she drank her herbal teas\, submitted to body sweepings with an egg\, and followed the recommendations of the local curandera. Now with over 25 years of nursing experience\, Caroline’s work\, which has been shared locally\, nationally\, and internationally\, centers on promoting individual and community health through holistic approaches. Currently\, she is an Associate Professor in Holistic Nursing at Pacific College of Health and Science and a doctoral student at Villanova University. Caroline is apprenticing in curanderismo\, the traditional Mesoamerican medicine from Mexico\, and researching the use of traditional medicine by Mexican American women living in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. This path has brought her back to where she started… navigating life with a foot in two worlds. \n  \nThomas A. Chávez\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor/Research Faculty\, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center\, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, Division of Community Behavioral Health \nDr. Thomas A. Chávez is a counseling psychologist and currently a faculty member at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center/School of Medicine. He has taught courses in counseling with an emphasis on cultural proficiency. His scholarship focuses on improving the health and well-being of Latinx communities through culturally centered interventions. In part\, his mission is to integrate traditional medicine to promote holistic health. As such\, he has grown up with the practices of traditional healing and has over ten years of practice in the specialization of traditional massage and ventosas (fire cupping) and facilitating sweat lodges. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n Watch Now \n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: ATV-UTV Safety for Women
DESCRIPTION:ATV-UTV Safety for Women\nSummary: Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous industries. Farmers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries\, and farming is one of few industries in which family members (who often share the work and live on the premises) are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries. ATVs and UTVs are found on all types of farms; they are useful for agricultural work\, but they also pose serious hazards to operators and passengers. Studies indicate that injured ATV/UTV passengers are more commonly female and youth and that helmet use is significantly lower for passengers. The focus of the training would be on ATV/UTV maintenance and safety features\, personal protective equipment (PPE)\, load and weight considerations\, operation on public roadways\, as well as employee training and considerations for working alone. \nIntended Audience: Producers- This training is intended primarily for agricultural producers\, including but not limited to farmers\, ranchers\, and any person or persons involved in some combination of raising field crops\, orchards\, vineyards\, poultry\, or other livestock. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-05068-SH8 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. SUMMARY:Webinar: Protecting and Promoting the Health of Young Agricultural Workers: The Role of Employers and Supervisors
DESCRIPTION:Protecting and Promoting the Health of Young Agricultural Workers: The Role of Employers and Supervisors\nSummary: There are many benefits for hiring youth in agriculture\, including the development of job skills\, increased self-esteem\, responsibility\, and earned income. However\, adolescents and young adults working in agriculture (under 25 years old) are at increased risk for occupational injuries. In addition to traditional workplace hazards\, developmental differences (both physical and cognitive)\, inexperience\, fatigue\, and distracted behaviors increase the risk of injury. Employers and supervisors play an active role in protecting these workers. Communicating effectively with young workers about health and safety hazards that impact injury risk is key to protecting this population. This webinar will describe specific skills and practices that can be implemented in the workplace\, on family farms\, and in agricultural classrooms. Intended Audience: Employers\, Parents\, Educators \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify risk factors that increase injury risk among adolescents and young adults.\nRecognize the role that supervisors (i.e.\, employers\, parents\, educators) play in protecting young workers.\nIdentify resources that can be used to address both traditional and non-traditional workplace hazards.\nApply communication skills and workplace practices that can be utilized in the workplace\, on the family farm\, or in agricultural classrooms.\n\n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: ¡Basta! Working Together to Prevent Sexual Harassment in the Agricultural Workplace
DESCRIPTION:!Basta! Working Together to Prevent Sexual Harassment in the Agricultural Workplace\nSummary: Workplace sexual harassment (WSH) in agriculture is a persistent and pervasive problem that threatens employees’ safety and well-being and damages organizational climate and trajectory. Until recently\, tailored trainings about WSH and resources specific to the agricultural sector and its audiences were lacking. Over the past several years\, researchers and partners with the Pacific Northwest Agriculture Safety and Health (PNASH) Center in Washington State have worked with a number of agricultural and industry stakeholders (e.g. farmworkers\, growers\, government leaders and agencies\, legal experts\, advocates\, etc.)\, to explore the nature of WSH and to develop relative education\, resources\, and training. \nWhile education alone will not stop WSH\, it’s an important strategy in a multi-faceted approach to prevention. In this webinar\, participants will be introduced to The Basta! Prevent Sexual Harassment in Agriculture training\, toolkit\, and video. The Basta! training uses an evidence-based\, community-engaged approach to help employees\, HR staff\, and growers prevent and address sexual harassment in the agricultural workplace. \n  \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Invest in Your Health Week: Tools for Ag Educators
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nRegister for the entire week and attend as many webinars as you can! The recordings will be available for the ones you miss. \nMonday\, October 17\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nSay What? Protecting Your Hearing \nThis Invest in Your Health: Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders\, and others who work with young adults. The young ag producer works in an environment with noise hazards and plays in an environment with noise hazards. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is common (and preventable) but unfortunately\, the use of hearing protection among youth is not. \nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCultivating a Healthy Mind – Mental Wellness for Youth \nStigma exists across all age groups for those struggling with mental health. Navigation of the teen years in everyday situations can create angst and uncomfortable feelings that are difficult to express. Adding mental illness and mental crisis to a teen or young adult’s typical growth and development makes struggling with emotions\, relationships\, academic success\, and safety more challenging. According to the CDC\, rates of depression and anxiety climb significantly during the ages of 12-17. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of youths in the United States. This module opens an introductory discussion of mental health among teens and young adults with guidance from an adult educator. Focus is placed on decreasing stigma\, improving mental health literacy\, and positive coping skills for teens and young adults. The module showcases a high school agricultural student’s understanding of the agricultural mental health crisis\, helping to frame mental health distress to academic and future career success. \nWednesday\, October 19\, 2022 @12pm-1pm CT \nStop Zoonosis in its Tracks – Prevention of Zoonosis \nAgricultural producers are at high risk for acquiring a zoonotic disease related to their work environment with minimal information related to risks\, symptoms and prevention. The majority of emerging infectious diseases in the U.S. are zoonotic in nature. They are often difficult to determine and many go unreported for a variety of reasons. \nThursday\, October 20\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nWhere Y’at – Using Mapping to Define Hazards in Agriculture \nParticipants will learn about the Hazard Mapping curriculum and will be given access to all teacher and student materials after completing the webinar. A Hazard Map is a visual representation of the workplace where there are hazards that could cause injuries or illness. The Hazard Mapping method draws on what students know from their farming experience. The Hazard Mapping approach works best when conducted among a small group of students with some similarity in their work and exposures. \nFriday\, October 21\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCover Up! Head to Toe Personal Protective Equipment \nThis Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders and others who work with young adults. \nAgriculture is ranked as one of the most dangerous occupations and involves workers and family members of all ages. Illness and injuries can be prevented if we use the right protective equipment for the job. This program will present an overview of common exposures in farming and ranching and identify appropriate personal protective equipment.
