SUMMARY:Webinar: Drive Present\, Arrive Safe
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Driving demands more than skill—it requires awareness\, presence\, and emotional control. This presentation explores how mindfulness practices can improve focus\, reduce stress\, and enhance safety on the road. Participants will learn how slow\, intentional movements\, calm breathing\, and emotional regulation can help prevent reactive driving behaviors and fatigue-related crashes. The session also addresses the dangers of multitasking\, drowsy driving\, and “passive fatigue” caused by long\, monotonous routes. Practical tools and take-home strategies—such as mindful breathing exercises\, pre-drive check-ins\, and healthy rest habits—equip drivers to stay alert and proactive. This session reminds participants that “Your mind and presence are your most important safety features.” \nObjectives: During this presentation\, attendees will learn… \n How sleep impacts health and safety \n The effects of drowsy and distracted driving \n What mindfulness is \n Tips and techniques for mindful driving \nIntended Audience: Anyone who drives\, with a particular focus on driver’s education students. \nMeet the Presenter: Ashley Fenning\, Food\, Nutrition\, and Health Instructor\, Nebraska Extension \n Register \nTo register for this training\, you must have a free account in the AgriSafe Learning Lab. SUMMARY:Webinar: A Conversation on Cultivating LGBTQ+ Safe Spaces for Ag Youth
DESCRIPTION:Summary: It is important for agricultural educators to create inclusive and safe learning environments for all youth. This includes taking intentional steps to make LGBTQ+ youth feel like there is a space for them in the agriculture industry\, 4-H\, and FFA. But it’s not always easy to know where to start. \nYou can take your first step by joining us for “A Conversation on Cultivating LGBTQ+ Safe Spaces for Ag Youth.” This webinar is intended to equip ag educators with practical strategies and insights to foster inclusivity\, understanding\, and equity in their programs. Implementing this knowledge will enable teachers and leaders to best support all students. This increased support will go on to draw in even more students to join the program! (Increased inclusivity = increased # of members!) \n  \nWhy are we talking about LGBTQ+ youth in agriculture? \n\nJune is Pride Month\, a time to celebrate diversity and the LGBTQ+ community.\n45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in 2022 – but those who felt affirmed and supported at school had lower rates of acting on those thoughts (source: The Trevor Project).\nEveryone has a place in the agricultural industry and deserves to feel like they belong.\nBy cultivating an inclusive environment and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in ag\, we can increase positive health outcomes for that population as well as increase the number of youth who plan to go into the ag industry in the future!\n\n  \nIntended Audience: Ag educators\, teachers\, parents\, community members \n  \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to… \n\nHave a better understanding of LGBTQ+ youth and their experiences\nFeel confident in helping LGBTQ+ youth to feel like they have a space where they belong in agriculture\nBe prepared to create LGBTQ+ safe spaces in the ag education classroom\nBe able to find and share resources in the local community to support LGBTQ+ youth\n\n  \nSpecial thanks to the Cultivating Change Foundation (CCF) for working with AgriSafe to make this webinar a reality! CCF is a nonprofit whose goal is to “value and elevate LGBTQ+ agriculturists through advocacy\, education\, and community.” \n  \n Watch the Recording Here \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Invest in Your Health- Stay Cool! Prevention of Heat Related Illness in Agriculture Train the Trainer
DESCRIPTION:[Illustration: Word cloud\, with the most prominent phrase being “heat wave\,” along with dozens of varying sizes of words and phrases\, including\, “infant heat stroke\,” “elderly\,” and “heat index.”] \nSummary: Agriculture is ranked as one of the most dangerous occupations and involves workers and family members of all ages. Heat-related illness occurs when the body’s temperature gets too high and the body’s ability to dissipate heat through sweating and other methods is overcome. Several conditions can result from this such as heat cramps\, heat exhaustion\, or heatstroke. In 2014\, 253\,000 young workers between the ages of 16-23 were employed in agriculture. In production agriculture\, it is common to work in a hot environment and/ or in direct sunlight. Every year\, thousands of workers become sick from exposure to heat\, and some even die. Heat-related illnesses\, while potentially deadly\, are easily preventable. \nIntended Audience: This Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders and others who work with young adults. \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar participants will be able to… \n\nIdentify the various types of heat-related illnesses\nIdentify warning signs of life-threatening exposures\nLearn immediate care procedures\nAccess educational resources\n\n Watch the Recording Here

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cultivating a Healthy Mind - Mental Wellness for Youth Train the Trainer
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Stigma exists across all age groups for those struggling with mental health. Navigation of the teen years in everyday situations can create angst and uncomfortable feelings that are difficult to express. Adding mental illness and mental crisis to a teen or young adult’s typical growth and development makes struggling with emotions\, relationships\, academic success\, and safety more challenging. According to the CDC\, rates of depression and anxiety climb significantly during the ages of 12-17. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of youths in the United States. This module opens an introductory discussion of mental health among teens and young adults with guidance from an adult educator. Focus is placed on decreasing stigma\, improving mental health literacy\, and positive coping skills for teens and young adults. The module showcases a high school agricultural student’s understanding of the agricultural mental health crisis\, helping to frame mental health distress to academic and future career success. \nObjectives: After the module\, teens and young adults will be able to…. \n\nUnderstand the relationship of mental health to physical health and academic or career success\nRecognize basic signs or symptoms that present when young adults experience mental stress\nIdentify healthy and unhealthy coping behaviors when faced with mental distress\nCommunicate their concerns when suspecting they or someone they know is experiencing a mental health crisis\n\nIntended Audience: This Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders and others who work with young adults. \n Watch the Recording Here

\nWednesday\, October 19\, 2022 @12pm-1pm CT \nStop Zoonosis in its Tracks – Prevention of Zoonosis \nAgricultural producers are at high risk for acquiring a zoonotic disease related to their work environment with minimal information related to risks\, symptoms and prevention. The majority of emerging infectious diseases in the U.S. are zoonotic in nature. They are often difficult to determine and many go unreported for a variety of reasons. \nThursday\, October 20\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nWhere Y’at – Using Mapping to Define Hazards in Agriculture \nParticipants will learn about the Hazard Mapping curriculum and will be given access to all teacher and student materials after completing the webinar. A Hazard Map is a visual representation of the workplace where there are hazards that could cause injuries or illness. The Hazard Mapping method draws on what students know from their farming experience. The Hazard Mapping approach works best when conducted among a small group of students with some similarity in their work and exposures. \nFriday\, October 21\, 2022 @ 12pm-1pm CT \nCover Up! Head to Toe Personal Protective Equipment \nThis Train the Trainer course is designed for teachers\, Extension staff\, 4H and FFA leaders and others who work with young adults. \nAgriculture is ranked as one of the most dangerous occupations and involves workers and family members of all ages. Illness and injuries can be prevented if we use the right protective equipment for the job. This program will present an overview of common exposures in farming and ranching and identify appropriate personal protective equipment.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Protecting and Promoting the Health of Young Agricultural Workers: The Role of Employers and Supervisors
DESCRIPTION:Protecting and Promoting the Health of Young Agricultural Workers: The Role of Employers and Supervisors\nSummary: There are many benefits for hiring youth in agriculture\, including the development of job skills\, increased self-esteem\, responsibility\, and earned income. However\, adolescents and young adults working in agriculture (under 25 years old) are at increased risk for occupational injuries. In addition to traditional workplace hazards\, developmental differences (both physical and cognitive)\, inexperience\, fatigue\, and distracted behaviors increase the risk of injury. Employers and supervisors play an active role in protecting these workers. Communicating effectively with young workers about health and safety hazards that impact injury risk is key to protecting this population. This webinar will describe specific skills and practices that can be implemented in the workplace\, on family farms\, and in agricultural classrooms. Intended Audience: Employers\, Parents\, Educators \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify risk factors that increase injury risk among adolescents and young adults.\nRecognize the role that supervisors (i.e.\, employers\, parents\, educators) play in protecting young workers.\nIdentify resources that can be used to address both traditional and non-traditional workplace hazards.\nApply communication skills and workplace practices that can be utilized in the workplace\, on the family farm\, or in agricultural classrooms.\n\n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:NFSHW 2021: Pediatric Farm-Related Injuries: Safeguarding Children Who Visit or Live on Farms
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Injuries are the most common cause of death for children and adolescents\, and farms and ranches present many unique hazards to youth. During this presentation\, we will discuss many of these including augers\, grain bins\, gravity boxes\, tractors\, power take-offs (PTOs)\, manure pits\, chemical exposures\, animals\, and gasoline-powered pressure sprayers. One of the most common causes of serious injuries and deaths to youth on farms and ranches are the use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) like all-terrain vehicles (ATVs)\, utility task vehicles (UTVs)\, and recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs). The safety concerns and prevention strategies related to ORVs will be a featured segment of the presentation. A general overview of how the growth and development of youth affect the risk of injury\, and the role healthcare providers can assume to impact injury prevention will be discussed. \nIntended Audience: Anyone working with youth in agriculture\, and rural healthcare providers \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to…\n1. Name at least four specific safety hazards on farms and express how one might counsel families to prevent injuries from those hazards.\n2. Describe what a PTO is and how one avoids injuries associated with them.\n3. State at least two ways to prevent injury when operating tractors.\n4. Convey how one would attempt the rescue of someone caught in a grain bin\, or manage an extremity caught in an auger.\n5. Explain at least three reasons why off-road vehicles like all-terrain vehicles and utility task vehicles are not designed to be used on roads. \nPresenter: Charles Jennissen\, MD\, Clinical Professor\, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine \n Watch the Recording Here \n

SUMMARY:Children and Youth: Living\, Working and Playing Safely on Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we discuss “Putting Farm Safety Into Practice\,” featuring the newly released Agricultural Youth Work Guidelines\, which help parents and supervisors assign age appropriate tasks to youth. We’ll also discuss non-working children and visitors to farms and ranches\, and ways to keep them safe. \nFarms and ranches are great places to live\, work and play\, and there are numerous benefits to growing up on them. However\, agricultural worksites are among the most dangerous in the U.S.\, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities to youth. For working youth\, too many of these injuries and deaths are the result of performing work that does not match their abilities. \n\n\nRegistration Instructions: \n\n\n\nIf you don’t already have a profile with AgriSafe\, please set up a free account. SUMMARY:Protecting Young Adults in the Agricultural Workforce
DESCRIPTION: In 2014\, The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 253\,000 young workers between the ages of 16 and 24 worked in agriculture. Young workers who live and work on farms are also exposed to potentially dangerous farm-related hazards. Farm operators who hire youth to work on their farm should be aware of all applicable child labor laws. \nAt the conclusion of this program\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify physical and psychological developmental factors to consider when employing and training young adults in the agricultural sector. \nDefine agricultural hazards and exposures that increase the risk of injury and illness among the young worker.\nDescribe regulatory standards that can promote a safe work environment for young employees. \nCreate action steps that can reduce agricultural injury and illness. \n\n This training has expired.
