SUMMARY:Webinar: Women and Heat Stress
DESCRIPTION:Summary: People who work outdoors are more likely to become dehydrated and experience heat-related illness or heat stress. Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable\, thousands become sick from occupational heat exposure every year\, and some cases are fatal. Agriculture is an industry where workers have suffered heat-related illnesses. Specific groups within the agricultural community\, including pregnant women\, older workers\, and young children\, could have elevated risks related to prolonged heat and humidity exposure. However\, with proper information and preventative action\, heat-related illness can be avoided for all populations in the agricultural community. \nThis training will identify the warning signs of heat-related illness and discuss prevention strategies\, including protective clothing and equipment to protect agricultural workers from the risks associated with prolonged exposure to heat and humidity. \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-37171-SH1 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. It does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the U.S. Department of Labor\, nor does mention of trade names\, commercial products\, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. \n Watch Now \n

SUMMARY:Using Naloxone to Reverse Opioid Overdose in the Agricultural Workplace: Information for Employers and Workers
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the U.S. Surgeon General called for increased awareness and availability of naloxone\, the opioid antagonist\, to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. Despite the rise in the dispensing of naloxone\, there is a significant gap in our response across all sectors of society. In the rural parts of our country\, where emergency response times can be dangerously long\, developing a workplace naloxone availability and use program could ultimately save lives. This webinar will share information from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to help employers and workers understand the risk of opioid overdose and the role of naloxone. \nBy the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss what medications are prescription and illicit opioids and what is OUD (Opioid Use Disorder)\nDescribe the dangers of opioids in the workplace and OUD for safety-sensitive occupations\nDiscuss the role of naloxone in opioid overdose\nDiscuss the implementation of workplace naloxone use programs\nUnderstand the administration of the dosage forms available for naloxone used in an emergency\n\n  \n\n\nRegistration Instructions: \n\n\n\nIf you don’t already have a profile with AgriSafe\, please set up a free account. DESCRIPTION:It has been over 25 years since participants first enrolled in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) cohort; in 1993-97\, a total of 89\,655 individuals joined the study\, including 52\,394 private pesticide applicators (mostly farmers) and 32\,345 of their spouses from North Carolina and Iowa\, and 4\,916 commercial applicators from Iowa. The cohort has been followed through 3 surveys (1999-2003\, 2005-2010\, and 2012-2015) and regular linkages to databases to assess both cancer and non-cancer health outcomes\, such as respiratory\, autoimmune\, endocrine\, and neurological diseases. Participants provided detailed data on pesticide use and other agricultural exposures at enrollment and in the first two follow-up surveys\, and numerous research papers have investigated potential disease associations. Many participants have also contributed to special studies\, including recent projects on Lung Health\, Biomarkers of Exposure and Effect\, and Memory and Aging. This presentation will highlight a selection of recent findings from the AHS (i.e.\, in the past 5 years)\, including a focus on non-cancer outcomes as well as recent cancer and mortality findings\, and will describe current and future research priorities. \nAt the end of this webinar participants will be able to: \n\n An overview of the study design and the assessment of exposures and health outcomes\nScope of research and selected findings on non-cancer health outcomes\nHighlights of recent mortality and cancer findings\nDescription of current and future research priorities\n\n  \n\n\nRegistration Instructions: \n\n\n\nIf you don’t already have a profile with AgriSafe\, please set up a free account. SUMMARY:Proactive and Reactive Society: Focus on Rural Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Stress and anxiety over things we have no control over can overwhelm us to the point where we have no energy left to focus on the things we do have control over.
