SUMMARY:Webinar: Road Safety and Agriculture As We Age
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Agriculture is one of the most hazardous occupations with 1 in 5 agriculture producers being affected by a disability. Transportation incidents\, which include tractor overturns and roadway crashes\, were the leading cause of death for farmers and farm workers and caused injuries from minor to debilitating. \nSo how can we reduce fatalities and prevent serious injuries? One answer lies in the vital work of AgrAbility\, which helps farmers and ranchers with disabilities continue working safely and productively. \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \nRecognize AgrAbility\, their resources and the people they serve \n Identify strategies for how to prevent traffic injuries \n List risk factors related to aging \nIntended Audience: Farmers/ranchers and those that support them\, and anyone who drives \nMeet the Presenter: Cindy Kovar\, BS\, CPST\, CarFit Technician & Coordinator\, AARP Certified Instructor \n Watch the Recording \nTo register for this training\, you must have a free account in the AgriSafe Learning Lab. SUMMARY:Webinar: Navigating Rural Realities: Addressing Substance Use and Aging in Agricultural Communities
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Join us for an insightful presentation that delves into the unique challenges faced by aging individuals in rural agricultural communities\, where the intersection of substance use and the aging process pose complex problems. We will examine the social\, economic\, and healthcare factors that contribute to substance use among older adults in the agricultural sector. \nThe specific nuances of rural life that impact substance use patterns will be explored\, from the isolation often experienced by farmers to the stressors associated with unpredictable agricultural cycles. We will explore the impact of these factors on mental health and coping mechanisms\, leading to a deeper understanding of the prevalence of substance use among the aging population in rural areas. We will also examine interventions and innovative approaches that have proven effective in mitigating substance use issues among the aging population in rural settings. Whether you are a healthcare professional\, community leader\, or someone interested in the well-being of rural communities\, this presentation will provide valuable insights and practical strategies for addressing substance use and promoting healthy aging in the unique context of agricultural life. \nIntended Audience: Rural medical and mental health providers\, community providers\, community leaders anyone who works in rural areas \nObjectives: At the end of this webinar participants will… \n\nHave an increased awareness of the unique challenges faced by aging individuals in rural agricultural communities that contribute to substance use.\nUnderstand the factors that contribute to substance use in the aging agricultural population.\nBe able to identify and use common interventions to address substance use in rural populations.\n\n Watch the Recording Here

SUMMARY:Webinar: More than Milk: Strong Bones and Injury Prevention for Aging Women in Ag
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Do farmers or ranchers really retire? Generational family operations frequently include the aging parents\, the living legends of agriculture. Farmers and ranchers self-identify good health with the ability to work. The normal aging process slows down one’s ability to engage in meaningful activities physically and mentally\, essentially to continue working. Swirl in the postmenopausal issues incurred by the female farmer\, and a myriad of health hazards arise. \nUnlike men\, who experience a gradual loss of bone mass as they age\, women will lose over 30% of their bone mass in the first five years after menopause. Agriculture is a hazardous and uncertain profession. Women are working well past the age of menopause. Training measures should focus on avoiding common risk factors and preventative actions to decrease the likelihood of an injury. Workplace and home safety are achievable. We will also address other age-related changes such as vision\, hearing\, and sleep disturbance. Every member of the family operation will benefit from learning creative strategies and solutions to help the aging in-place seniors achieve wellness and self-fulfillment.\n \nThis material was produced under grant number SH-37171-SH1 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\, U.S. Department of Labor. SUMMARY:Proactive and Reactive Society: Focus on Rural Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Stress and anxiety over things we have no control over can overwhelm us to the point where we have no energy left to focus on the things we do have control over. Being 5% healthier may not seem like much of an improvement however\, it’s still better than the alternative which is no improvement. That often times turns into a worse-case scenario. Ted will emphasize simple tools to help break the stagnant cycle and how to strengthen family bonds during times of crisis. \nRural healthcare providers and safety professionals have an important role to play in supporting people experiencing stress or mental health challenges. Come listen as Ted Matthews talks about what we can do to be proactive and prepare ahead of crisis. Ted understands the demands farmers face because he counsels farmers in a plethora of areas from crisis intervention to helping farmers relate to their families and workers to better utilize their resources.  If you’re a rural health professional looking to integrate mental health counseling in your care\, take time to listen to Ted’s experiences.  He will help you rethink your approach to providing mental health support. \n\n\nRegistration Instructions: \n\n\n\nIf you don’t already have a profile with AgriSafe\, please set up a free account.
