Board of Directors - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I nominate myself or someone else for the AgriSafe Board of Directors? Click on this link to access a nomination form.

What Board positions must be filled each year? There are normally 2-4 vacancies on the Board of Directors. AgriSafe is seeking nominations for the Board of Directors which is a three year term.

Who is the ideal Board candidate? There is no “ideal” Board candidate. Instead, AgriSafe wants its Board to include individuals with diverse work, life, social and educational backgrounds so that it can make well-rounded decisions that reflect its entire membership. AgriSafe seeks true diversity — in terms of age, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, industry, location and work roles — in its Board. The ideal candidate should be prepared and willing to serve.

What do Board volunteers do? Board members are responsible for strategically thinking, planning and evaluating on behalf of AgriSafe. While AgriSafe staff typically execute programs, the Board is responsible for envisioning the program, setting their direction and evaluating them for progress and success.

What do Board volunteers get in return for their service?  Previous AgriSafe Board members have attested to the tremendous value of Board service. In addition to impressive line items for their resumes, they have reported significant professional and personal benefits, including: the opportunity to meet, work with leaders; the chance to share their own knowledge, expertise and training with others; professional recognition that elevates their stature within their own organizations and within the community at large; valuable work experience that opens the door to new career opportunities; and relationships with new friends and lifelong mentors.

What type of reimbursement for travel is available? Board members will receive up to $300 per board meeting for reimbursement of travel expenses.

How much time does Board service require? Although Board members must be willing to invest time in preparing for and thoughtfully participating in Board meetings, the time commitment is not onerous. AgriSafe meets once a year for a full day. Also, each member of the Board serves on one or more of the committees and should therefore be available to participate in regular committee calls.

What’s the nominating process? AgriSafe will accept Board nominations through the electronic submission process.  The executive director will assign nominees to board members. Board members will contact nominees and conduct an interview using the matrix criteria approved by the board.  Board members will summarize the result of the interview and present the nominee for consideration during the next board call/meeting.  Candidates will be elected by a board of directors vote.
